Ancient DNA research goes nuclear

چکیده
136 biotech and life sciences worldwide as part of a larger project to map human technological development (Fig 1). “Maps can help answer or at least address a number of key questions,” said Hoffman. “Where around the world is biotech really happening or beginning to happen? How important is economic geography now that the life sciences are spilling out of university, governmental and industrial laboratories into regional economies? Where is the search for ‘biotech gold’ breaking down national boundaries and political jurisdictions, with different regions and different countries banding together to compete in the global economy?”

Achievements and Peculiarities in Studies of Ancient DNA and DNA from Complicated Forensic Specimens
Studies of ancient DNA specimens started 25 years ago. At that time short mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) fragments were the main targets in ancient DNA studies. The last three years were especially productive in the development of new methods of DNA purification and analysis. Complete mtDNA molecules and relatively large fragments of nuclear DNA are the targets of ancient DNA studies today. Ancient ...
متن کاملAncient DNA from Human and Animal
Research on ancient DNA (aDNA) has the potential to enable molecular biologists and archeologists to decipher certain aspects of history by direct looking into the past. However, several major problems in this field limit the applicability of aDNA studies, most importantly contamination with modern DNA and postmortem DNA degradation. In this study we extracted and analyzed aDNA obtained from ~3...

The past decade has witnessed a revolution in ancient DNA (aDNA) research. Although the field's focus was previously limited to mitochondrial DNA and a few nuclear markers, whole genome sequences from the deep past can now be retrieved. This breakthrough is tightly connected to the massive sequence throughput of next generation sequencing platforms and the ability to target short and degraded D...
متن کاملNuclear Gene Sequences from a Late Pleistocene Sloth Coprolite
The determination of nuclear DNA sequences from ancient remains would open many novel opportunities such as the resolution of phylogenies, the sexing of hominid and animal remains, and the characterization of genes involved in phenotypic traits. However, to date, single-copy nuclear DNA sequences from fossils have been determined only from bones and teeth of woolly mammoths preserved in the per...
متن کاملNuclear gene phylogeography reveals the historical legacy of an ancient inland sea on lineages of the western pond turtle, Emys marmorata in California.
The historical biogeography of California's taxa has been the focus of extensive research effort. The western pond turtle (Emys marmorata) is an example of a wide-ranging taxon that spans several well-known California diversity hotspots. Using a dataset comprised of one mitochondrial and five nuclear loci, we elucidate the major biogeographic patterns of the western pond turtle across the Calif...
